Brigadier General P. Neal Scheidel is the Air Force chief of security police, commander of the Air Force Office of Security Police, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., and assistant inspector general for security police, Headquarters U.S. Air Force. He manages more than 40,000 security police and combat arms personnel deployed throughout the world, and is responsible for the Air Force Combat Arms Training and Maintenance program.
General Scheidel was born in 1936, in Platte Center, Neb., and graduated from South Salem (Ore.) High School. He received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Stanford (Calif.) University in 1959 and a master's degree in counseling and guidance from Troy (Ala.) State University in 1972. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1962, Air Command and Staff College in 1972, and the Air War College in 1978; all at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.
He entered the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant in October 1959. His first operational assignment after attending Air Police School was as an air police officer at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, later serving as operations officer. From April 1961 to April 1964, he was assigned to Headquarters 2nd Air Force, Barksdale Air Force Base, La., as an air police officer and chief of the Missile Security Section. He then moved to England where he served as chief of security police at Royal Air Force Station Mildenhall and later at West Ruislip Air Station.
From June 1967 to July 1968, he served as chief and commander of security police at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. Upon completion of his Southeast Asia tour of duty, General Scheidel was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as a staff officer in the Installation Security Division of the Security Police Directorate, Office of the Inspector General.
Following graduation from Air Command and Staff College in August 1972, he was assigned as chief of the Weapons Systems Security Division, Directorate of Security Police, at Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. In June 1973 he was reassigned as deputy director in the same directorate. He became Military Airlift Command's chief of security police in August 1975 and subsequently became deputy base commander at Scott Air Force Base in December 1976.
The general attended the Air War College from August 1977 to May 1978, and upon graduation, was assigned initially as deputy and then in August 1979 as chief of security police at Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base, Germany. He assumed his present duties in March 1982.
In October 1983 the general became a special consultant to the president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. General Scheidel is an advisory board member of Crime Stoppers International and the National Law Enforcement Explorers, Boy Scouts of America.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon.
He was promoted to brigadier general May 1, 1983, with date of rank Oct. 1, 1982.
