Major General Lovic P. Hodnette Jr., is air deputy, Allied Forces Northern Europe, Oslo, Norway.
General Hodnette was born in 1927, in Charleston, S.C. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in June 1944, and attended the University of Alabama from 1944 to 1946. He then entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., from which he graduated in June 1950 and received his commission in the U.S. Air Force and bachelor of science degree. He has a master of science degree in international affairs from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., 1969. He attended the Squadron Officers School, 1955; the Air Command and Staff College, 1961; and the National War College, 1969.
After graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy, he attended flying school at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, and Williams Air Force Base, Ariz., and received his pilot wings in October 1951. He then completed combat crew training in the F-80 aircraft at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.
During the Korean War in 1951, he was assigned to the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing in Japan. In 1952 he flew 55 combat missions while serving with the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at K-13 airfield.
From March 1954 through September 1957, General Hodnette was an instructor pilot and assistant group operations officer in fighter combat crew training at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz. From October 1957 to October 1958, he was in the Republic of Vietnam assigned as fighter adviser to the Vietnamese Air Force, flying the F-8F Bearcat at Bien Hoa Air Base.
The next five and a half years, General Hodnette was with the Electronic Systems Division at L.G. Hanscom Field, Mass., as a project engineer and program manager for advanced range instrumentation for the national ranges and Air Force space programs. During this period, he attended the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., 1960 - 1961.
In April 1964 General Hodnette returned to tactical flying and was commander of the 17th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron in the 66th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing located at Laon, France, and later Royal Air Force Station Upper Heyford, England. He attended the National War College, August 1968 to August 1969.
General Hodnette then returned to the Republic of Vietnam and joined the 460th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Tan Son Nhut Airfield as deputy commander for operations. He flew 205 combat missions in the RF-4, RF-101, RB-57, and EC-47.
He returned to the United States in September 1970 and served with Headquarters U.S. Air Force as chief of objectives assessment in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Operations. In January 1971 he went to Royal Air Force Station Alconbury, England, as vice commander of the 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing and assumed command of the 10th Wing in August 1971.
General Hodnette returned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in June 1972 and assumed duties as director of reconnaissance and electronic warfare in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Research and Development. In May 1975 he became the director, Operational Requirements and Development Plans, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Research and Development.
In September 1975 General Hodnette was assigned as the Air Deputy, Allied Forces Northern Europe, with headquarters in Oslo, Norway.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with 13 oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
General Hodnette's hometown is Tuscaloosa, Ala.
He was promoted to the grade of major general effective July 1, 1975, with date of rank Oct. 1, 1972.
