Brigadier General William W. Dunn is deputy chief of staff, development plans, Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md.
General Dunn was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1930, and graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1948. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., in June 1952, with a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and a bachelor of science degree in general engineering. He received a master of science degree in nuclear engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology, 1957, and a doctorate in physics from Texas A&M University, 1963. He is also a graduate of the Air War College, 1971.
After graduation from the academy in June 1952, General Dunn went to Sandia Air Force Base, N.M., for training as a nuclear weapons officer and later became a special weapons instructor with Detachment B, 1090th Special Reporting Group. In June 1953 he served as a physicist officer with the 12th Aviation Field Depot Squadron. He was assigned in October 1953 as a nuclear officer and later assistant nuclear officer with the Strategic Air Command's 12th Aviation Depot Squadron, Okinawa.
In August 1955 he entered the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In March 1957 he was assigned to the Shield Design Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Tenn. From February 1958 to January 1961, he served as a nuclear research officer with the Nuclear Weapons Effects Unit and the Flight Dynamics Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He then began graduate work in physics at Texas A&M University.
General Dunn was assigned as a nuclear effects staff officer in July 1963 and later research and development officer in the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Research and Development, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. In November 1966 he was transferred to Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., where he served as a physicist in the Strategic Analysis Division, and later as a staff scientist with the Deputy Chief of Staff for Development Plans in February 1967.
From September 1968 to August 1970, General Dunn was research and development director and later deputy director of the AFSC West Coast Study Facility at Los Angeles Air Force Station, Calif. In August 1970 he entered the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., and in July 1971 he returned to the Los Angeles Air Force Station as the deputy for development plans at the Space and Missile Systems Organization.
General Dunn became deputy chief of staff for development plans at Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md., in November 1973.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon, and the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award Ribbon. He wears the Missileman Badge.
He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general effective Aug. 1, 1974, with date of rank July 23, 1974.
