Homeland Security Subcommittee to Consider Cybersecurity Legislation TOMORROW

Washington, D.C. – The Homeland Security Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection, and Security Technologies, chaired by Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA), will consider the Promoting and Enhancing Cybersecurity and Information Sharing Effectiveness Act of 2011 (The PrECISE Act), H.R. 3674, tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Room 311 Cannon House Office Building.

The PrECISE Act was introduced by Lungren in December, along with Chairman Peter T. King (R-NY) and nine other Members.

The legislation will secure the homeland by protecting the nation’s critical infrastructure, such as the electric grid, financial services systems, and water facilities, from cyberattack.  This morning, the Director of National Intelligence noted that cyber threats pose a critical national and economic security concern, and recommended U.S. government engagement with private sector owners and operators of critical infrastructure to mitigate these threats. 

The PrECISE Act defines the Department of Homeland Security roles and responsibilities and protects individual privacy during increased public-private information sharing on cyberthreats. 

In addition to Lungren and King, original co-sponsors include Rep. Michael T. McCaul (R-TX), Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI), Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI), Rep. Billy Long (R-MO), Rep. Tom Marino (R-PA), and Rep. Bob Turner(R-NY), all Members of the Committee on Homeland Security, as well as Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH) and Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI).

At tomorrow’s markup, it is expected that Lungren will offer an Amendment in the Nature of a Substitute.
