Brigadier General John J. Liset is chief of the U.S. Air Force Section, Joint Brazil-United States Military Commission, and chief of the Air Force Section, Military Assistance Advisory Group, Brazil.
General Liset was born in Boston, Mass., in 1920. He graduated from BMC Durfee High School, Fall River, Mass., in 1938, and from Southeast Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1940. He received a bachelor of arts degree in international affairs from the University of Maryland in 1968. In September 1942 he entered the aviation cadet flying training program and received his pilot wings and commission as a second lieutenant at George Field, Ill., in February 1944.
He then entered transition training and upon completion was designated a B-17 and B-24 aircraft commander and flew as an instructor pilot in the Army Air Corps Gunnery School at Harlingen, Texas. He next joined the 448th Bombardment Group as a B-29 aircraft commander and in August 1946 the group was inactivated. After a short tour of duty at Myrtle Beach, S.C., General Liset joined the 22d Bombardment Group on Okinawa, where he had wing materiel responsibilities as well as those of pilot for the commander.
General Liset returned to the United States in November 1949 and began his long association with the military assistance programs in support of our allies. He was assigned to the U.S. Army 7th Medium Port at New York City and served as chief of the Port Air Materiel Office in Brooklyn and then as director of transportation of the U.S. Air Force Transportation Control Depot. In August 1952 he was assigned as chief of the Supply Branch, Air Force Section, Military Assistance Advisory Group, Norway.
In August 1956 he was assigned to Headquarters Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, as deputy chief of the military assistance program division and became chief of the division. From February 1960 to July 1960 he attended the U.S. Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk, Va. His next assignment was to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as chief of the Program Control Branch, Directorate of Military Assistance. In August 1964 he entered the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.
General Liset served as chief, Plans Division, Directorate of Military Assistance, Headquarters U.S. European Command, in France and Germany from July 1965 to September 1968. He then returned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force and served in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Systems and Logistics, as chief, Plans Branch and later was chief of the Materiel Management Division in the Directorate of Military Assistance and Sales. In April 1970 he entered the Defense Language School.
General Liset became chief of the U.S. Air Force Section, Joint Brazil-United States Military Commission, and chief, Air Force Section, Military Assistance Advisory Group, Brazil, in February 1971.
His duties since World War II have required knowledge of the Air Forces of most every country in the free world with whom the U.S. Government has or has had military assistance programs. In 1970 he served for six months as chairman of a special task group charged with developing a description profile and a mechanism for the Department of Defense Logistic System of the 1975-80 time frame.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He is a command pilot.
General Liset's hometown is Fall River, Mass.
He was promoted to the temporary grade of brigadier general effective Aug. 1, 1970, with date of rank June 28, 1970.
