Carl Brown McDaniel was born in Franklin, Texas, in 1901. He enlisted in the Army in June 1919, and served as a private, cadet sergeant, aerial flier and pilot at Kelly Field, Texas, until June 1922, when he became a technical sergeant with the Eighth Attack Squadron there. In July l923, he was appointed a second lieutenant of the Army Air Service and assigned as a flying instructor and engineer officer at Air Corps Primary Flying School, Brooks Field, Texas, where he served until August 1926. The following month he went to Luke Field, Hawaii, for duty with the 23rd Bombardment Squadron and in September 1927, was transferred to the 72nd Bombardment Squadron there. In February 1929, he joined the Fifth Composite Group at Luke Field.
General McDaniel became a flying instructor at the Air Corps Primary Flying School at Brooks Field in October 1929, and in July 1930, became engineer officer of the 46th School Squadron at that station. In February 1932, he transferred to Randolph Field, Texas, as a flying instructor at the Air Corps Primary Flying School and in July 1935, became a flight commander. In June 1937, he went to Langley Field, Va., as airplane commander of a combat crew type B-17, and materiel officer of the 96th Bombardment Squadron. In August l938, he participated in the goodwill flight from Langley Field to Bogota, Colombia, and return. He entered the Air Corps Tactical School at Maxwell Field, Ala., in June 1939, graduated two months later and returned to Langley Field as flight commander of the 96th Bombardment Squadron. In November 1939, he participated in the flight from Langley Field to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and return.
In February 1940, General McDaniel was designated to command the 20th Bombardment Squadron at Langley Field. In November 1940, he was appointed director of training of the Air Corps Advanced Flying School at Barksdale Field, La. In December 1941, he was designated commanding officer of the Air Corps Basic Flying School at Sebring, Fla., In January 1942, he became commanding officer of the AAF Combat Crew School at Hendricks Field, Fla., and in July 1942 assumed command of the field. In September 1943, he went to Smyrna (Tennessee) Army Air Field as wing commander of the 76th Flying Training Wing, of which he assumed command in February 1944.
General McDaniel was assigned to the Far East Air Forces in July 1944, and a month later became deputy commander of the 7th Air Force in the South Pacific. In July 1947, he was designated commanding general of the Aerial Observer Bombardier School at Mather Air Force Base, Calif., and commander of Mather Air Force Base. Three years later he assumed command of the Bombardment Combat Crew Training School at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. On Sept. 1, 1951, he became inspector general of the Air Training Command, with headquarters at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.
