Brigadier General Harold F. Knowles is director of special projects, Washington, D.C.

General Knowles was born in 1921 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He attended the University of Connecticut, Storrs, from 1938 to 1940, majoring in engineering. He then entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., completed flying school while a cadet, and graduated as a second lieutenant with a bachelor of science degree in June 1943.

From June 1943 to December 1943 he had additional pilot training, then became an instructor pilot at Harding Field, La. In November 1944, he was assigned to the 464th Fighter Squadron at Bruning Field, Neb. From March to August 1945 he was a P-47 pilot with the 33rd Fighter Squadron in Iceland. He returned to the United States and was assigned in August 1945 as P-51 instructor pilot at Sarasota, Fla. He was assigned as instructor in English at West Point in February 1946 and in mathematics in 1947. He went to Germany in 1948 and was assigned to the 601st Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron which was supporting the Berlin Airlift.

From September 1951 to July 1955, General Knowles served as an operations staff officer in the Directorate of Operations, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Force. In January 1956, he assumed command of the newly activated 465th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Griffis Air Force Base, N.Y., and in August 1957 assumed command of the newly activated 606th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron there.

General Knowles entered the Armed Forces Staff College at Norfolk, Va., in June 1958, and in January 1959 he was assigned as deputy for plans, 64th Air Division, Pepperrell Air Force Base, Newfoundland. In May 1960 he moved with the division headquarters to Stewart Air Force Base, N.Y. He was assigned in August 1962 as chief, Air Force Section, of the Morocco-United States Liaison Office, Rabat, Morocco.

He returned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force in August 1963, and served as deputy assistant and later as assistant for colonels assignments, Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel. He assumed command of the 3640th Pilot Training Wing, Laredo Air Force Base, Texas, in July 1967.

General Knowles was assigned as director of special projects with office in Washington, D.C., in May 1970.

His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. He is a command pilot.

General Knowles' hometown is Willimantic, Conn.

He was promoted to the temporary grade of brigadier general effective Feb. 7, 1970, with date of rank Feb. 7, 1970,
