Died.
General Arnold N. Krogstad was born in Lanesboro, Minn., on Aug. 28, 1885. He was appointed to the Military Academy from his native state on June 15, 1905, and upon graduation June 11, 1909, was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry.
Shortly after graduation he was ordered to Alaska where he was on duty with the 22nd Infantry at Fort St. Michael until June 1910. Upon his return to the United States he served with his regiment at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, to Feb. 24, 1912. He was then on border patrol duty at various posts in Texas and Arizona until Oct. 3, 1916, when he was detailed to the Aviation Section of the Signal Corps and sent to Aviation School at San Diego, Calif., for training. Upon completion of the course on June 15, 1917, he organized and commanded the School of Military Aeronautics at the University of California at Berkeley and was there until Oct. 3, 1917. He then commanded the Provisional Battalion at Selfridge Field, Mich., to Nov. 10, 1917. He organized and commanded Rich Flying Field, Waco, Texas, to April 1918, and was Liaison Officer in connection with training problems from Washington, D.C., to all Air Service Activities of American Expeditionary Forces, with headquarters at Washington, to May 22, 1918.
General Krogstad sailed for France on May 26, 1918, and after temporary duty under the Chief of Air Service, A.E.F., visited the various training centers and a number of American and foreign squadrons at the front. He returned to the United States on Aug. 22, 1918, and served as a member of the Air Service Coast Defense Board (Atlantic Coast) to Nov. 1, 1918; with the Division of Military Aeronautics at Washington, D.C., to Dec. 19, 1918; and at Eberts Flying Field, Ark., to Dec. 29, 1919. He commanded the Aviation General Supply Depot, Va., to Sept. 8, 1921, and was Air Officer, Second Corps Area, Governors Island, N.Y., to July 27, 1923.
He then went to Hawaii where he was Air Officer, Hawaiian Department, to Oct. 25, 1924; and Commanding Officer, Luke Field, to Jan. 9, 1926. Upon his return to the United States he was ordered to Langley Field, Va., where he served as Wing Operations Commander, Executive Officer and as a student at the Air Corps Tactical School. After graduation on Aug. 21, 1928, he attended the General Staff School until May 31, 1929, when he was ordered to Governors Island for duty as Assistant and later as Air Officer, Second Corps Area, in which capacity he served for three years. He was then ordered to Washington, D.C., for duty in the Office of the Chief of the Air Corps. During the months of May and June, 1933, he participated in the Air Corps Command and Staff Exercises at March Field, Calif., and Seattle, Wash., serving as Assistant Chief of Staff for Supply on the staff of Brig. Gen. Oscar Westover, who was in command of those exercises.
In the operation of the Air Mail Service by the Air Corps during the early part of 1934, General Krogstad performed the duty of Chief of Personnel.
From June 27, 1936 to March 1938, he was Commandant, Advanced Flying School, Kelly Field, Texas. He then assumed the duties of Wing Commander, 2nd Wing, General Headquarters Air Force, Langley Field, Va. He was assigned to command the 1st Bomber Command at Langley Field, on Sept. 29, 1941. He later served as acting Commanding General of the 1st Air Force and went on to command District No. 2, Technical Training Command, St. Louis, Mo. He was reassigned from St. Louis to Chicago, Ill., to command all AFTTC schools located there. On Aug. 22, 1943, the general assumed command of the Miami Beach Training Base in addition to his command of the 5th District, Army Air Force Technical Training Command.
