JUSTICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES NEARLY $15 MILLION TO
BOLSTER LOCAL ANTI‑DRUG EFFORTS
WASHINGTON,
D.C. -- The Justice Department today announced that local efforts to prevent
substance abuse by young people will be enhanced through nearly $15 million in
federal grants. The new grants will go
to 157 sites across the country through the Drug-Free Communities Support
Program. The program, now in its
fourth year of funding, is overseen by the White House Office of National Drug
Control Policy (ONDCP) in partnership with the Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention(OJJDP), the Justice Department agency that administers
the grants. OJJDP is a component of the
Department’s Office of Justice Programs (OJP).
With the addition of the sites announced today, the
Drug-Free Communities Support Program will fund more than 450 community
coalitions of youth, parents, media, law enforcement, school officials,
religious organizations and other community representatives in all 50 states,
the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The program allows local coalitions to
strengthen their efforts to prevent and reduce young people’s illegal use of
drugs, alcohol and tobacco by encouraging citizen participation and by
disseminating information about effective programs.
“The battle against substance abuse will be won by
communities dedicated to addressing the many different reasons people use
drugs,” said OJP’s Assistant Attorney General Deborah J. Daniels. “Through the Drug-Free Communities Support
Program, a substantial number of communities are now mobilized to work
creatively to reduce the demand for drugs.”
ONDCP and OJJDP selected the new sites through a
competitive review of nearly 400 applications.
The new program sites represent a cross‑section of projects from
every region in the nation, including rural, urban and suburban communities.
Awards range from $30,810 up to $100,000 for use over the next year, and
grantees may apply for continuation awards. Current Drug-Free Communities
Support Program grantees tailor their activities to meet the unique needs of
their communities. “The Drug-Free
Communities Program enables local communities to develop local solutions to
local problems, and lets residents participate in helping their neighbors and
taking pride in their successes,” added Daniels.
Attached is a list of the new Drug-Free Communities
Support Program grants. More
