10/12/2010 - GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS) -- October is nationally recognized as energy awareness month.

The Federal Government is the nation's largest energy consumer, and we can all do our part to make the Air Force more energy efficient.

Here are some energy saving tips:

-- Get in the habit of turning off lights when leaving a room.
-- Turn off computer monitors, printers, copiers and fax machines at night and on weekends.
-- Use task lighting or day lighting when possible.
-- Print and copy only what's needed.
-- Make sure air conditioning and heating supply and return vents are not obstructed.
-- Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
-- Turn off personal computers, televisions, stereos and other electronic devices when away.
-- Report energy waste including water leaks, building deficiencies and energy abuses to the building manager.
-- Take the stairs whenever possible.
-- Do not open windows with the air conditioning or heater running.
-- Wash and dry full loads of laundry. A washing machine uses an average of 55 gallons of water per load.
-- Wash clothes in cold water.
-- Thermostats should be set no colder than 78 degrees in summer and no warmer than 68 degrees in the winter.

Oh I believe it. I'm upset for all the Amn Duong's out there having to sound excited about each new initiative... it's out of control. November should be National No-Cause Month.

TR if you think reading about all these awareness months is tough, try having to write about all of them. Oh, and also the first half of October is also Hispanic Heritage Month.

For those keeping count, October is now Breast-Cancer-Awareness, Energy-Awareness, Cyber-Security-Awareness, Physical-Therapy-Awareness month. And counting. No wonder all the kids in this country have ADD.
