Every DS&T officer is a Technical Intelligence Officer (TIO). TIOs come from diverse engineering and applied science backgrounds to solve emerging complex challenges we face at the CIA. They use their expertise to support the mission and ensure the CIA can adapt to the ever-changing technical issues that arise within the 21st century. There are four main TIO specialization areas.

TIO – Operations Tradecraft

Are you an energetic and enthusiastic engineering professional who enjoys applying creative solutions to complex and often difficult technical and operational problems? Do you enjoy breaking things apart to figure out “how it works?” If so, you may be interested in this position where you will be required to use a wide array of tools and techniques to design, troubleshoot and verify your design while communicating your findings to colleagues via written or oral communications.

TIO – Technical Research

Are you an “out of the box” thinker who has ingenious solutions to complex problems? Do you want to implement scientific theories to support and enhance the intelligence mission? This work demands initiative, creativity, advanced research skills and technical expertise to help make our current practices more efficient and suitable for our home or field operations.

TIO – Technical Development

Do you have a strong technical background, but enjoy the behind the scenes aspects of running a multi-million dollar project? Do you like to communicate the end solution to complex problems and ensure customer requirements are met? This job is one where an individual can analyze requirements, propose solutions, conduct engineering analyses, manage development activities, and transition systems to full operation. You’ll need the technical and people skills to keep technical projects up and running in a dynamic work environment.

TIO – Technical Analysis

Do you focus on technical details rather while maintaining the “big picture” outlook? In this role, you will be working in an environment where you can perform all source analysis and research to understand intelligence gaps and intelligence priorities. You will learn basic targeting and tradecraft to further enhance the CIA’s strength in fighting informational security breaches from our adversaries.
