WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA) announced that Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) has received the “Champion of Consumer Rights” Award for his work helping families through difficult economic times.

“It is a pleasure and an honor to receive the Champion of Consumer Rights Award,” said Congressman Cohen.  “Congress has a responsibility to help working families during these tough economic times.  Whether it is helping families keep their homes or working toward jumpstarting the economy and creating jobs, we can not rest until everyone has the tools they need to lead a happy, prosperous, productive life.”

NACBA President Carey Ebert commended this year’s recipients: “In an atmosphere of unprecedented home foreclosures, unemployment and soaring medical costs, American families desperately needed someone to champion their concerns.  This year’s recipients have answered the call and stepped up to help struggling Americans in economic crisis.  These recipients have shown American families the dignity and respect they deserve in times of trouble.”

As Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, Congressman Cohen has held a series of hearings this past year on home foreclosures and student loan legislation.  He also has worked to ensure that the bankruptcy system provides a fresh start for honest but financially distressed people and small businesses.

With more than 4,700 members, NACBA (http://www.nacba.org) is the only national organization dedicated to protecting the rights of consumer debtors in bankruptcy and helping consumer bankruptcy attorneys represent their clients. The Champion of Consumer Rights award was established by NACBA in 1993.
