WALB: Megan's House Opens in Valdosta

VALDOSTA, GA - A new center that serves children with disabilities and their families opened Thursday in Valdosta.

The home gives caregivers a break by temporarily caring for the children.

Congressman Sanford Bishop cut the ribbon on Megan's House on Williams Street.

This is the third Megan's house after ones in Albany and Waycross.

They're named after Megan Holloman who died at age 14 from a rare chromosome disorder.

Her mom Carol sang a song in her honor and talked about the importance of having respite care.

"We have found in Albany when we first started, we found people were afraid to do it but once they came and broke that ice and came that one time they'd schedule them again to come back because they love it we have wonderful caregivers," said Carol Holloman, Megan's mom.

"Another Megan's House is a really a God send for so many families," said Rep. Bishop, R-Georgia.

Megan's House is operated by Easter Seals.

Congressman Bishop helped get federal funding from the U-S Department of Health and Human Services.
