Hahn Announces $1.5 Million Program to Protect Los Angeles from Nuclear/Radiological Attack

Oct 15, 2012 Issues: Defense and National Security

SAN PEDRO, CA – Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn announced that the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office in the Department of Homeland Security has chosen the Los Angeles/Long Beach area as the first expansion of the Securing the Cities program to detect and prevent a radiological or nuclear attack. In September, Congresswoman Hahn sent a letter to the Director of the Securing the Cities program, strongly urging the selection of the Los Angeles/Long Beach Urban Area for the first implementation of the program beyond the pilot region of New York City.

“A nuclear or radiological attack in Los Angeles is all of our worst nightmares,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “But with the Securing the Cities program coming to our region, we can all sleep a little sounder. The Los Angeles region was the obvious choice for expanding Securing the Cities, and I’m glad we were able to make the Department of Homeland Security see that. The funds, training, and attention provided through this program will go a long way to enhance our ability to detect and defeat any nuclear threat.”

In her September 4th letter to the Director of the Securing the Cities program, Congresswoman Hahn argued that further efforts to guard Los Angeles against nuclear or radiological attack are “vitally important to helping keep this region safe, as it faces a wide volume of threats given its large size, modern infrastructure, and the hundreds of high profile events the region hosts as the center of the film and entertainment industry.”

As part of the program, the Los Angeles/Long Beach area will receive a direct grant of $1 million and an additional $500,000 in training support. Initial efforts will focus on meeting the immediate needs of state and local agencies to develop baseline nuclear detection and reporting capabilities, including equipment and training.
