Wildland fire in the California desert poses serious consequences to the fragile arid ecosystem.  Most desert plants cannot tolerate wildland fire.  The Fire Management Program  in the California Desert District (CDD) was established by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to provide protection both to the public and the sensitive ecosystems unique to the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.  The promary area of fire protection responsibilities include that area covered in the California Desert Conservation Area (CDCA).  The California Desert District covers about one-fourth of the state, including land in eight counties.
