Cohen Anounces Over $250k for Homeless Veterans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a $252,887 public housing voucher grant to the Memphis Housing Authority under its Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program.

When our servicemen and women return home from the battlefield, finding a roof over their head or a warm place to sleep should be the very last thing they should have to do battle with,” Congressman Cohen said. “We owe it to them to provide whatever resources are necessary for them to make the transition back to civilian life.

The HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program provides Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance to homeless Veterans in combination with case management and clinical services offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs.  VA provides these services for participating veterans at VA medical centers and community outreach clinics. Funds for the Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program are furnished through the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2012. The Appropriations Act made voucher funding available to provide rental assistance under a supportive housing program for homeless veterans as authorized by the United States Housing Act of 1937, which created the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
