BJS Human Subjects/Confidentiality Requirements

All recipients of funding from BJS are required to comply with the Federal requirements concerning human subjects research and confidentiality of information identifiable to a private person.

All applicants should review the following materials prior to submission of an application. These materials are in portable document format (pdf) which require the Adobe Acrobat reader to be viewed. The last two listed are electronic versions of the forms pertaining to human subjects research and data confidentiality which must be submitted with the application.

• Protection of Human Subjects and Privacy Certificate Requirements For Applicants for Funding from the Bureau of Justice Statistics is a statement of BJS policy and describes the requirements of the Department of Justice Common Rule which protects human subjects, 28 CFR Part 46, and the Office of Justice Programs Confidentiality Regulations, found at 28 CFR Part 22. • BJS Human Subjects Protection Certification of Compliance provides guidance for applicants on procedures they must take to ensure the protection of human subjects against undue and unnecessary risks. (9K pdf)
  
  
• Privacy Certificate allows applicants to describe procedures they will use to protect the confidentiality of data identifiable to a private person obtained for research or statistical purposes. It also enumerates the assurances applicants must provide to guarantee data confidentiality. (14K pdf)
