Two Germany-based soldiers killed in Iraq are identified

Two Schweinfurt, Germany-based soldiers have died in Iraq, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

Sgt. Lawrence J. Carter, 25, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Pfc. William R. Newgard, 20, of Arlington Heights, Ill., died when a bomb went off near their vehicle during combat operations in Baghdad on Dec. 29, according to a news release.

Newgard was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. Carter was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, under control of 1st Armored Division.
