US, Canadian civilians reported missing in Afghanistan
KABUL – Two foreign civilians have been reported missing in Afghanistan, police said Saturday.
“The US military based in Wardak province came to us and said that a Canadian man and an American woman traveling from Kabul to Wardak were missing on the outskirts of the capital,” provincial police spokesman Abdul Wali told dpa.
They were in contact with the US forces in Wardak until they arrived at the western gate of Kabul, which links the capital to the the south-western Wardak province, Wali said. He said it was not clear if they were abducted by any groups.
The highway that goes through Wardak often comes under attack by insurgents, robbers, and criminal gangs.
The US and Canadian embassies were not immediately available for comment.
NATO said they could not confirm, nor deny the report. "We know about the reported incident and we are tracking media reports. But we have no operational report of any kidnapping," an official said.
In May, two foreign and two Afghan aid workers were kidnapped by a criminal group in the northern province of Badakshan. The Afghan workers were released by the kidnappers and the foreign aid workers were released in a NATO operation.
