1.0 Site Identification

2.0 Site Status Summary

This site includes the Irigaray and Christensen Ranch in situ leach mines in one license, NRC License SUA-1341. The area of these two in-situ leach sites (7 miles apart) containing well fields or facilities is approximately 687 acres. Groundwater restoration is complete at Irigaray and nearly complete at Christensen Ranch. The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ) approved the ground water restoration at the Irigaray mine units for the WDEQ Underground Injection Control Permit. COGEMA submitted a restoration report for Irigaray Mine units 1 through 9 to NRC staff in November 2005. In September 2006, NRC staff concurred with WDEQ's approval that the gound water had been restored to premining class of use. Cogema submitted to the NRC a Wellfield Restoration Report dated March 6, 2008, for Christensen Ranch Mine Units 2 through 6. The report is currently being evaluated. Surface decommissioning began in 2002 for several evaporation ponds and all the well fields at Irigaray Ranch (Decommissioning Plan approved December 31, 2001). Equipment and building components that cannot be decontaminated will be shipped with the contaminated soil to the Pathfinder - Shirley Basin tailings impoundment for disposal. Since the site was returned to operational status September 30, 2008 with the intent of returning to uranium production, decommissioning of the central processing plant at Irigaray Ranch will not continue. The plant will be refurbished for a return to operation. Surface reclamation of the wellfields at Irigaray will continue as COGEMA has no intent to reopen wellfields at Irigaray for production. The satellite processing plant at Christensen Ranch will be used for operations as uranium production has not occurred at several permitted wellfields at Christensen Ranch. The cost for decommissioning is estimated to be approximately $12.1 million. In December 2009, Cogema Mining, Inc., was sold to Uranium One USA, Inc. and it's parent company Uranium One, Inc.

COGEMA license was changed to a possession-only license in 2001 after active ISL mining ceased and groundwater restoration commenced. In a letter dated April 3, 2007, COGEMA requested a an amendment of its license SUA-1341 to revert to an operating (uranium production) status from the possession only status. COGEMA would like to resume mining at mine units at the Christensen Ranch Satellite facilty. On September 30, 2008, the license was changed from possession only status to operating (uranium production) status. On May 30, 2008, COGEMA submitted a license renewal application to have it's license renewed for a 10-year period. On September 30, 2008, license amendment to restart operations was approved. Site is in operational status, but lixiviant cannot be injected to produce uranium until a successful pre-operational inspection is conducted and the financial surety is updated to reflect operational status. Pre-operational inspections are scheduled to occur in Fall 2010. Uranoum One is plannig active operations in last CY 2010.

Request to renew the current license for another 10-year period is currently being evaluated.
