2.0 Site Status Summary
This site was added in anticipation of NARM Final Rule. An assessment of soil and groundwater thus far indicate no impact, however, more extensive sampling may need to take place once the license termination process begins. This licensee is currently evaluating disposal options in order to meet a license condition prohibiting long term storage of radium painted aircraft instruments/gauges.
A historical site associated with this license has been evaluated by the Kansas Department of Health Bureau of Environmental Remediation for potential soil and groundwater contamination related due to past Radium-226 soil contamination to dumping radium contaminated solvents from aircraft instrument stripping operations. Radium-226, lead, and Cadmium have been identified in the soil above recommended removal levels. There is also contamination of the groundwater with PCE. A Unified Focused Assessment Report has been prepared by KDHE BER and a summary is available online at

3.0 Major Technical or Regulatory Issues
The licensee has no financial assurance and it is not clear whether or not disposal of radium painted aircraft instruments/gauges in the current facility or cleanup at the historical location of use can be accomplished with funds available. If funds are not available, the historical site may have to be referred to the US Environmental Protection Agency for a mandatory removal action under CERCLIS.
