Death of a Survivor Annuitant Under CSRS or FERS

If an individual receiving recurring CSRS or FERS monthly survivor annuity payments dies, the survivor annuity payments terminate on the last day of the month before the one in which the survivor died.  If a surviving spouse/former spouse dies who is receiving the FERS Basic Employee Death Benefit in installments, any remaining installments will be paid as a lump sum death benefit.

Please notify OPM of the death of a CSRS or FERS survivor annuitant.  Call, write, or use the Online Death Report Tool.
