EMS

An Environmental Management System is a formal management framework that provides a systematic means of reviewing and improving operations, creating awareness, and improving environmental performance. The U.S. Navy’s EMS is based on the International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001 model, which employs a cycle of policy, planning, implementation and operation, evaluation and corrective actions, and management review. By September 30, 2009, the Navy had completed EMS implementation at 100 percent of its U.S. and appropriate overseas facilities. The Navy’s EMS goal is to continually improve environmental performance, and to this end provides bases and regions with tools, templates, and training to assist with implementation efforts. The Navy’s EMS website is designed as a clearinghouse for EMS resources. The Navy is committed to ensuring the best use of EMS as a business practice to improve uniformity, efficiency, and shore facility management.
