The U.S. Navy is a large-scale owner of buildings, documents, archeological sites, ships, aircraft and other cultural resources of great historic significance to the United States. As examples, the Navy has nearly 4,000 buildings that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places; maintains the USS Constitution (the oldest afloat commissioned warship in the world), and manages lands in Southern California at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake that contain 4,000 year old rock art within the Coso Rock Art District.
