The Search for Optimal Superconductors: "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"

Abstract

Conventional wisdom teaches us that magnetism and superconductivity are incompatible. However several examples are now known, which not only contradict this long-held belief but support the idea that magnetic instabilities are necessary for high temperature superconductivity. In this talk, I will emphasize aspects of our understanding of the interplay between crystal structure, magnetism, and superconductivity as a route for designing practical superconductors. Some specific examples will include 2D versus 3D transition metal pnictides and chalcogenides, such as CaFe4As3, and the checkerboard Mott insulator Sr2F2Fe2OS2.
