Environmental Restoration

Many U.S. Navy and Marine Corps bases have been in existence for 50 or even 100 years. These facilities serve ships and aircraft, providing training opportunities for the dedicated people who maintain and operate those systems daily in support of national defense, and perform and other vital missions for America and our allies. In some cases, industrial and chemical disposal practices that were commonplace when these facilities were founded are now recognized to pose a potential risk to human health and the environment.

Today, we have aggressive programs to clean up sites that have been impacted by past operations. Through more environmentally sound practices, personnel training, and investments in technology, the Navy and Marine Corps are making steady progress toward restoring sites for future use.
