After you have completed the requisite entry on duty forms (in-processing), you are now ready for your
"Job-Site Orientation." Your job-site orientation could take place in more than one "site."
For example, if you are employed at Headquarters in Washington, you will complete your in-processing at the Human
Resources Division. From there, you may go to your employing program area or division for initial job-site orientation.
Here, orientation will be focused on your program area and/or division. From there, you may go to your branch or staff office.
Here you will receive job specific orientation.
If you have been hired to work in the field, you will complete your entry on duty forms at your employing office.
In addition to completing in-processing, you will receive information about the Agency and many other topics. From there,
you will go to your job site, which may be a privately owned establishment under Federal inspection.
The physical location of your job site will vary, but your orientation will be the same—job specific. Job-site
orientation will focus on topics that include, but are not limited to:
- Introductions to co-workers and supervisors/managers and others with whom you will interact frequently
- Tours of work facilities
- Policies and procedures
- Specific duties and responsibilities
- Job description
- Performance standards
- Health and safety
To ensure that all new FSIS employees receive orientation in accordance with Agency requirements, your supervisor
will use a Job Site Orientation Checklist. This form provides guidelines for orientation and lists various
topics to be discussed. Some of the topics will be discussed during your first week at the job site and some
topics will be discussed later.
As each topic is discussed, your supervisor will use a check mark to indicate that each item has been completed.
Upon completion of your new employee orientation, you and your supervisor will review the checklist, sign it, and
forward it to the appropriate Human Resources Office.
