GOP LEADERSHIP MUST RESPOND QUICKLY AFTER HURRICANE IRENE

“Days before the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we’re all praying that there is no damage from Hurricane Irene. If there is damage, however, Congress absolutely must respond quickly, efficiently, and compassionately. It should be the policy of this body that we're going to be wherever our citizens need us in times of emergency."

RICHMOND PASSES AMENDMENT TO CREATE JOBS

Mr. Richmond’s amendment increases funds for the Bureau of Oceans and Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement by $5 million. The additional funding is estimated to increase the pace of oil drilling permitting and, as a result, contribute to the creation of some 230,000 jobs.The measure passed 221-192.

RICHMOND AND SCALISE INCREASE DREDGING FUNDING

Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) released the following video of his Floor statement after the House passed the Scalise/Richmond amendment to the Energy and Water Appropriations bill. The amendment would add $6.3 million to the Army Corps of Engineers budget for dredging of waterways. The bipartisan measure passed 241 – 418.

"Finally, we have a decision to make more people whole. The settlement represents progress on this issue, but more must be done to assist homeowners impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, for some storm survivors, this decision is too little too late."

RICHMOND INTRODUCES FEMA RECOUPMENT FAIRNESS ACT

"Almost six years after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, the government is attempting to recoup disaster assistance from people who didn’t do anything wrong. In Orleans and Jefferson Parishes alone, FEMA is asking 104 people to pay an average of $7,000 each. It’s absurd!"

RICHMOND: TANKER GROUNDING ILLUSTRATES NEED FOR INCREASED DREDGING

“Two nights ago, an 800 foot ship carrying carbon black oil ran aground and is still stuck in the center of the Mississippi River. We’re lucky that it is not currently blocking traffic or leaking oil, but this incident highlights the danger of failing to dredge.”
