Welcome to Sasebo Elementary School

Welcome to Sasebo Elementary School! We are located on the main base or Dragon Glen housing area, adjacent to Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo, our school shares the campus with E.J. King Middle/High School. With an enrollment of approximately 250 students, our programs from Sure Start to Grade 6 are filled with opportunities for whole group and individualized instruction that are aligned with the DoDEA curriculum standards.

There has been a DoDEA school located in Sasebo continuously since 1948. The first school was located in a Quonset hut and there was a reported enrollment (in grades 1-12) of 48 students. Most were Army children. In September 1945, the U.S. Marines landed on Sasebo and laid the foundation for the present U.S. Fleet Activities, Sasebo. The U.S. Navy arrived and slowly the base and the American community were established in the heart of Sasebo City. The residential areas were named Dragon Gulch, Dragon Vale, and Dragon Heights. The school was named “Dragon School.” A sign with the picture of the Dragon and the name “Dragon School” was built by the Army Engineer Corps and placed on the front of the building.

The present K-6 school has existed since 2003 and in honor of the first DoDEA school in Sasebo adopted the Dragon as its mascot. As we prepare for a new school construction project to begin within the next couple of years we will see the Dragon legacy continue in a new building far beyond the scope of a Quonset hut.
