The European Union (EU) and a member of the United States Congress, Trent Franks (representing Arizona 2nd Congressional District), Wednesday joined world organisations in condemning the Christmas day bombings in various Nigerian cities describing the attacks as cowardly and appalling.

The decision by Secretary Salazar disregards the Arizona Wilderness Act of 1984 (AWA), a compromise that permanently banned uranium exploration on over 650,000 acres outside the Grand Canyon through designated Wilderness. This historic agreement was part of a negotiated compromise with environmental groups which affirmed the compatibility of mining with conservation interests in areas not locked away by the Wilderness Act.

Trent Franks leading effort to restrain abortion in D.C.

While noting some sympathy for the moral objections of those made to follow laws passed by people they didn’t elect, Franks cites the Constitution and the authority it gives Congress to “exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever” in the capital. “Even a good lawyer couldn’t twist that one,” he said.

Franks’ bill, HR 919, would transfer 315 acres in the Mohave Valley from BLM to the Arizona Game and Fish Commission for it to use as a public range.


Abortion's 'tightrope'

The Canadian Medical Association Journal this week also urged Canadian doctors to limit women's reproductive rights, recommending in an editorial that doctors conceal the sex of a fetus from all pregnant women until 30 weeks of pregnancy to curb the incidence of sex-based abortion in certain immigrant communities.
