Dear Fellow Coloradan,

Thank you for signing the petition in support of my bill to help small businesses access capital and create jobs. Over 6,000 Coloradans have signed their names to my petition, and the signatures are still coming in.

My bill would be a huge boost to the American economy. It would help small businesses across the country create over 100,000 jobs in the first year alone by responsibly lifting a burdensome federal regulation on credit union loans, stimulating Main Street economies across Colorado and throughout the country without costing taxpayers a dime.

But we face an uphill battle.

Wall Street special interest groups are lobbing Congress to block my bill, so we need to make sure the voices from Main Street are just as loud. I will need your help in the next couple of months to persuade my Senate colleagues that this common-sense piece of legislation is worth their support.

Here are the three steps you can take to help:

  1. Share your story with me about how credit unions helped your small business grow or hire new employees: http://markudall.senate.gov/smallbizstory
  2. Ask your friends to sign my petition: http://markudall.senate.gov/smallbizjobs
  3. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Here are some “talking points” to get you started: http://markudall.senate.gov/smallbiztps

In Congress, we like to throw numbers around, but I’ve found that personal stories that put a face to those numbers can be much more powerful. In my speech to the Senate earlier this month, I told the story of Stacy Hamon, a Coloradan who owns 1st Street Salon in Thornton.

Stacy was turned away from a bank because her loan was too small to be worth the bank’s effort, but when she approached her credit union, she received the loan she needed to open her business and create jobs.

Small businesses do not need million-dollar loans. In many cases, $50,000 to $200,000 loans are enough to get a business off the ground or help it expand – and those are exactly the kind of small-business loans credit unions specialize in. Local credit unions are in a position to help these small businesses innovate and grow, but a burdensome federal regulation constrains many of them to slow or stop their small-business loans altogether.

For every small-business owner like Stacy who is able to secure a loan from her credit union, there is another who is still searching for capital. Let’s pass this bill for Main Street.

Warm regards,

Mark Udall
