Frequently Asked Questions Air Force Discharge Review Board (AFDRB)
How long does it take to process an application?
  • Records review -- approximately 10 to 12 months
  • Personal appearance (Andrews AFB MD) -- approximately 10 to 12 months
  • Personal appearance (Regional location) -- approximately 12 to 18 months
Can the AFDRB consider a change to my reenlistment eligibility (RE) code?
Not directly. If the request involves a change to the characterization of service or narrative reason for separation (discharge upgrade), the AFDRB may also consider a change to the RE code. Requests for change in RE code not involving discharge upgrade must be submitted to the Air Force Board for Correction of Military Records. AFBCMR).
Is my discharge automatically upgraded after six months?
No. You must request your discharge be upgraded by submitting DD Form 293

What does the AFDRB base its decisions on?

Equity and propriety (the burden of proof rests with the applicant)
What is Equity?
Equal treatment; applying rules and regulations to the same set of circumstances.
What is Propriety?
Did the Air Force follow its own rules and regulations in processing your discharge.
If my discharge is upgraded, will I receive my Montgomery GI Bill or get the money I paid into it back?
The Montgomery GI Bill or the New GI Bill is not under the purview of the AFDRB. You should contact your nearest Department of Veterans Affairs representative or go to their website.
If I request a personal appearance hearing in Washington DC (Andrews AFB MD), will I get my decision quicker?
It's possible. Personal appearance boards are held twice a week at Andrews AFB, Maryland
If I can't afford to come to Washington, DC, will the Board travel to my area?
The AFDRB travels to regional locations.
  • West Region - California -- Sacramento
  • East Region - Georgia -- Atlanta
  • Mid-West Region - Texas -- San Antonio
  • AFDRB Home Base - Washington DC -- Andrews AFB MD
Note: Washington DC board meets regularly. The AFDRB also holds hearings at these alternate locations.
How often does the Board travel to regional locations?
Texas has a Personal Appearance Board once a year normally in August. When there are a sufficient number of cases to warrant the expense of travel to other locations, the Board will hold hearings in Georgia/Florida and California.
Can I have my application reviewed on a records review (non-personal appearance) basis as well as a review based on a personal appearance?
Yes.
Will the AFDRB provide counsel?
No. It is your responsibility to obtain counsel. You can obtain private counsel or you may consider assistance from a Veterans' Service Organization.
Will the AFDRB pay for my transportation and/or lodging?
No. Applicants are responsible for their own transportation and lodging.
Can I bring character witnesses with me to a personal appearance?
Yes. Your witnesses can testify or observe but you are responsible for the costs involved.
Should I submit issues when I request a records review?
Yes. The AFDRB looks for issues of equity and propriety. The burden of proof is on you to establish the discharge was inequitable or improper.
What do I do if I move before I receive my decision?
Submit your name, SSAN and change of address to the SAF/MRBR (AFDRB), 550 C Street West Ste 40, Randolph AFB, Texas 78150.
What kind of documentation can I provide to help with my case?
