As an Aviation Structural Mechanic for the United States Navy, Amanda Hodges works on the hydraulic system. This includes servicing it, taking out components or riveting – which takes a lot of adrenaline and a long attention span.

“You know, the first time I went on a carrier, I remember feeling like I never was standing in the right spot, but it was also the most exciting and visually entertaining experiences I think I’ve ever had.”

After high school, Amanda wasn’t clear on her direction and bounced around to various jobs. She became increasingly interested in the Navy and hands-on jobs, which led her to her eventual position as an Aviation Structural Mechanic.

Amanda knows the value of her roots. To her, remembering where you come from is extremely important. She is proud that she found her way in a male-dominated field and feels confident that she can do anything a man can.

“If any girl wants to become an aviation mechanic, I would say go for it. It’s seriously one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had in my life.”
