Current and Future

“Diversity throughout our Navy remains a top priority. In order to remain an effective Naval Force, now and in the future, we must recruit, develop and retain the best and brightest personnel our nation has to offer.”

Admiral Patrick M. Walsh, Vice Chief of Naval Operations

Being A Global Force For Good starts in our own neighborhoods, with our people, our opportunities for growth and success, and our culture. We recognize that diversity offers an exceptional way for America’s Navy to strengthen itself, and we support and encourage it in our ranks at every level, including senior leadership.

Our mission is to continue to increase collaboration, broaden our community outreach, and strengthen our internal support infrastructure, now and in the future. One way we enable this is through our Command Managed Equal Opportunity (CMEO) Program, which is designed to ensure that merit, ability, performance and potential are what lead to promotions.

We also have recently built connections that resulted in historic increases in minority admissions at the Naval Academy and in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Program. In fact, the incoming 2013 Naval Academy class will be the most diverse ever, reaching 35% minority representation. The 2013 NROTC class also reached a record high enrollment at 31%.

We’ve increased our mentoring and professional growth programs, and partnered with the following multicultural pre-professional affinity groups:

• The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
• The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)
• The Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES)
• The Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
• The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES)
• The Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA), just to name a few

We’ve also ramped up our involvement with STEM Education Coalition (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and MANA, the Mexican American National Association (a leadership development organization for young Hispanic women).

America’s Navy is committed to making sure everyone who hears the call is welcomed into a family they will proudly call their own for the rest of their lives – a family that exists like no other on land, at sea or in the air.
