Project Description:
Welcome to the IMET Historical Project!
Incident Meteorologists, or IMETs, have been supporting U.S. firefighting efforts for over ninety years.
The program is a part of the National Weather Service (a line office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, NOAA) and currently involves a cadre of roughly 70 volunteers who serve on-site with the
Incident Command Teams. Though IMET service still focuses on support of wildland firefighting efforts, the
program has been expanding to other all-hazards support including events ranging from oil spills to political
conventions to post hurricane response and recovery. Over the past few years, IMETs have also assisted the
Australian Bureau of Meteorology during some particularly devastating fire seasons
"down under". Their
mission is simple: "To protect life and property" of both the public and the crews/personnel involved in the
event.
This project aims to preserve some of the rich heritage of the IMET program in the form of narratives,
pictures, time lines, podcasts, and more. This Web site is the gathering place to share this heritage.
