While anyone can get colon polyps, certain people are at greater risk and should get regular screenings.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Colon polyps are growths on the surface of the colon or the large intestine. Some are benign, but others are cancer or are on their way to becoming cancer.
You may have a greater chance of having colon polyps if you or someone in your family has had a history of colon polyps or colon cancer.
Most people with colon polyps don’t have symptoms, so doctors rely on periodic colonoscopies to discover polyps.
You can reduce your risk by
- eating more fruits and vegetables and less fatty food
- not smoking
- and exercising on most days
