While healthy eating is important for all of us, it’s critical for people with chronic kidney disease, because it can help slow down the disease.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
You can manage kidney disease better if you eat right. And here are some tips:
- Eat foods with less salt and sodium. Aim for less than 1,500 milligrams each day.
- Don’t eat more protein than your body needs – talk to your dietitian about what amount and types of proteins are best for you.
- And, eat heart healthy. Choose foods like poultry without the skin, vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products, and fish. Cook with nonstick spray or a bit of olive oil instead of butter; and grill, bake, or stir-fry instead of deep frying.
