Music Time in Africa is the longest running English language program at VOA. Since 1965, this award-winning show has been playing pan-African music that crosses all genres and generations, including rare interviews and music from the Leo Sarkisian Library of African Music.
5:00 AM - 6:00 AM Sunday October 14, 2012
This award-winning music program features not only contemporary sounds, but also rare recordings of many African musicians. The first half of the program focuses on traditional music and the second half on pop.
Music Time in Africa is VOA’s longest running program, founded in 1965 by veteran broadcaster Leo “Music Man for Africa” Sarkisian. Today its mission remains unchanged: to celebrate Africa’s rich contributions to world culture. Join host Heather Maxwell and discover African music in cultural context where each piece of music brims with life and meaning beyond the sound recording. Every program features timeless treasures new and old from across the continent and the African diaspora.
Heather Maxwell is an ethnomusicologist and experienced music professional in West Africa and the United States. In addition to her on-air talent and production, Heather writes the companion blog African Music Treasures presenting in-depth reviews and conversation of rare recordings from the VOA archives. You can read more of her work at the blog African Music Treasures.
