What resources are available through Military OneSource?

Military OneSource provides a comprehensive service to assist military members and their families with virtually any quality of life question or concern.  Military OneSource provides tips for moving, information on international moves, as well as information on military benefits and allowances, changing schools, housing, spouse employment, planning for the financial aspects of moving, and many other topics related to relocation.  Since the housing office is always one of the first stops for incoming personnel, housing providers should make sure their customers are aware of this online resource.

What specific features does MilitaryHOMEFRONT provide that are of particular importance to housing providers?

The Moving Homepage under the Troops and Family Members Tab provides access to basic moving information (Moving 101), a segment on benefits and entitlements, FAQs, and links to Installation Overviews, Plan My Move, and MilitaryINSTALLATIONS. This information is provided to supplement the information provided by Relocation personnel on the installation.

Plan My Move, available on MilitaryHOMEFRONT, is an online moving tool that helps service and family members organize their move.  By providing the current duty station, future duty station, and moving date, Plan My move generates a three month calendar with general and installation-specific information necessary when moving for the military.  The calendar can be customized to meet a family's situation.  There are checklists, phone lists, and additional resources available.  Information can be found on child care and youth services, shipping household goods, housing (temporary and permanent), health care, sponsorship, and many other areas of interest.  Plan My Move outlines the moving process, breaking it down into clear manageable steps for experienced or first time movers.

MilitaryINSTALLATIONS, available on MilitaryHOMEFRONT, provides contact information for programs and services, maps and directions, links to comprehensive location overviews, and community points of interest for military installations worldwide.

There are so many web resources for military families. Is there one portal site that service providers, military members, and families can use that acts as an entry point to link with primary web resources?

MilitaryHOMEFRONT (MHF) was designed for just such a purpose.  This DoD site provides a vast amount of current information as well as valuable links to Service branch resources and other additional resources.  Designed to provide information specifically tailored to different audiences, MHF provides three focused sections of information for troops and families, leaders, and service providers.

How does the new Automated Housing Referral Network (AHRN) fit into housing referral services?

Through AHRN, property managers and homeowners who want to rent or sell without the services of a real estate agent may post their properties for each military community.  Housing providers at each installation are responsible for inspecting and vetting the properties that are listed.  Properties may be removed from the website if they do not meet the standards of fair housing practices or other standards set by DoD and the Services.

What has happened to the traditional Housing Referral office role?

Installation housing offices still have the housing referral responsibility, but the configuration of staff and functions may vary greatly depending on many factors. Some installations still maintain the traditional off-installation housing referral office while on-installation housing, if it has been privatized, is handled by a contractor.  On other installations, housing service offices maintain responsibility for all housing functions or maintain a liaison function with the contractor for privatization.

Given the changes in military housing referral and management functions, what defines the housing provider community?

The broad definition of "housing provider" includes anyone charged with providing information, guidance, and assistance on housing issues to military members, family members, and eligible civilians.  This includes all aspects of home-finding assistance and other accompanying issues such as entering into leases and fair housing practices.
