Housing Resources for Military Leaders

Military leaders have several resources available to them and their service members to answer the myriad of questions that arise concerning housing options.  Many issues or concerns regarding housing can be time sensitive (e.g. waiting lists or construction schedules).  The resources described below can provide the most current and reliable information.

Installation housing offices are the primary resource for housing information and provide different levels of services to the communities that they support.  Generally, service members are required to check-in with housing representatives when first arriving at the installation.  The housing office provides information on military housing availability and on the local community's housing market with regard to both rental properties and those available for purchase.  The installation housing office can answer questions concerning issues such as local rental rates versus the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates, waiting lists for base housing, and the migration of housing from the base to a privatized status.

Housing offices operating under the Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI) have somewhat different missions.  While the MHPI program is in progress, each installation's housing office will likely have a unique mission depending on where they are in the transition process. Once the MHPI transition is complete, private companies will manage the housing and housing offices will serve as liaisons between the service members and the civilian management companies.

The Relocation Assistance Program (RAP), sponsored by DoD and implemented by each of the services, provides service members with various types of assistance during their permanent change of station (PCS) moves.  RAP personnel at the installation level continuously update information about their installation on Plan My Move, which is designed to assist service members and their families with all the details associated with PCS moves.
