BOLD ALLIGATOR

Washington, Feb 9 -

This Saturday, I was briefed on and participated in BOLD ALLIGATOR 2012 aboard the USS WASP (LHD 1). BOLD ALLIGATOR 2012 is a large Navy-Marine Corps exercise designed to revitalize, refine, and strengthen core amphibious competency – a key component of a strong national defense.

I was able to see “first hand” what great ships and men and women we have on the front line of defense. I am consistently humbled by the professionalism and dedication of our Armed Forces and their leaders. I look forward to hearing the lessons learned and to then ensure that our military receives the resources they need to achieve the mission.

The visions of our military leaders throughout history have provided the nation with the capabilities needed to conduct today’s operations and we need to have the same commitment to future generations. USS WASP (LHD 1), the MV-22 Ospreys, and the landing craft and equipment permit the projection of power from the sea to engage a hostile enemy or to provide much needed assistance to those who suffer and need humanitarian assistance or disaster relief.  LHA 8 and LSD(X) are two vital shipbuilding programs to our future amphibious fleet.

I am deeply concerned that the President’s Budget will not reflect the necessary shipbuilding funds to support the current and future needs of our nation. If we are to maintain and reinvigorate our amphibious forces, then we need more modern and capable amphibious ships, aircraft and landing craft that can meet the future needs of our Navy and Marine Corps. While we tighten our belts in all areas of government, we must resist cutting our military capabilities beyond the bone and putting our Sailors and Marines at risk.
