Shimada homeported in Newport, OR.    Your duty location will be determined by your home of record. Salary will be determined by duty location and vessel classification. Note: A one-year trial period may be required.

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply to this position.

  • Applicant must pass medical and dental requirements prior to appointment.
  • Applicant must pass drug/urinalysis testing prior to appointment.

Directs and performs maintenance and repair work on the Engineering Department's ship sytems in accordance with manufacturer's and shipbuilder's technical manuals and NOAA policy as directed by supervising engineer. Directs the activities of unlicensed engineering personnel while on watch or performing maintenance. Resopnsible for the maintenance and operational requirements that ensure safe and effective operation of the engineering, electrical, or electrical systems that may be assigned to him/her. Keeps required records, logs, and reports. Stands engine room watches at sea or in port; may be on call during non-normal suty hours as required. Performs other mission related duties as assigned, including duties related to the safety of the vessle and personnel. Mariners work a 40-hour workweek maintaining and repairing the ship or completing and preparing for cruises when alongside their home port.

Applicant must have one year of experience as a Second Assistant Engineer. Experience must include operating, maintaining, and repairing marine diesel electric propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, refrigeration, ventilation systems, noise critical equipment and support systems, fully automated/unmanned engine rooms, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FEMA) systems, and automated power management systems, Shipboard Automated Maintenance Systems (SAMMS), related computer systems, software and networks, and other control devices. IN ADDITION: Applicant must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) license.


Applicants must possess the follwing: a valid U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) licenses for First Assistant Engineer: First Assistant Engineer Oceans, Second Assistant Engineer Oceans. USCG license must be endorsed for motor vessels of either unlimited horsepower or at least 3000 horsepower.

ICTAP candidates will be eligible if it is determined that they have exceeded the minimum qualifications for the position by attaining at least a rating of 85 out of 100.
