Project Snapshot: Restoring food supply in HaitiMarch 01, 2012Site Haiti Sector Food Challenge Mitigating the risk involved in rebuilding a key flour mill that was destroyed in the 2010 earthquake. Solution OPIC provided Seaboard Overseas Limited with political risk insurance that covered both the rebuilding and expansion of the mill. Impact Restarting domestic flour milling in Haiti has increased the country’s food production capacity and domestic food security. 
Project Snapshot: Bringing drinking water to the desertJanuary 23, 2012Country Algeria Sector Infrastructure Challenge: Severe water shortages in the city of Algiers Solution: $200 million in OPIC financing for the construction of a reverse-osmosis water desalination facility to deliver 200,000 cubic meters of potable water to Algiers each day. Impact: The plant, currently operating between 85% and 95% capacity, provides water for about 350,000 families in and around Algeria. 
OPIC in action: Small business loan improves food security, export opportunities in MoldovaNovember 23, 2011Site Moldova Sector Agriculture, Food Processing Challenge Lack of a domestic grain terminal meant Moldovan businesses had to export their agricultural products from ports in neighboring Ukraine. Solution A 2007 loan supported by OPIC for the construction by Kelley Grains Corporation S. R. L. of a new grain loading terminal and an oilseed crushing facility. Project profile: Mexican food project in Russia fuels sales of American-made equipmentOctober 21, 2011American entrepreneurs build a Mexican food business in Russia using an OPIC loan to fund its expansion, ultimately driving sales of equipment from a supplier in southern California. That’s the short story behind ZAO Solntse Mexico, a 2007 OPIC loan recipient, which was so successful introducing Mexican food products to Russia that it generated $9 million in revenues in 2010. Project snapshot: Renewable energy in India’s rice beltSeptember 08, 2011Site India Sector Renewable energy Challenge More than one billion residents of India have no electricity and many of them live in remote villages off the electricity grid. Solution $750,000 in debt financing for Husk Power Systems Inc. to cover the installation throughout rural India of 36 “mini energy generation facilities” that burn discarded rice husks to generate electricity. Impact Project Profile: OPIC loans fund India’s first large scale solar power plantsAugust 02, 2011Site India Sector Solar power Challenge Advance India’s goal of generating more power from renewable sources and bring power to rural areas located outside the existing electricity grid. Solution An initial loan of $6.2 million to Azure Power to construct a 2-megawatt solar power plant in Punjab. Additional loans for the construction of two other plants have followed.
