About Us The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Colorado manages 8.3 million acres of public lands, along with 27 million acres of mineral estate. The public lands in Colorado include a variety of resources including timber, forage, energy and minerals, recreation, wild horse and burro herds, fish and wildlife habitat, wilderness areas, and archaeological and paleontological sites.
The BLM has been given specific resource protection and law enforcement responsibilities that relate to its resource management mission. There are many federal laws and regulations that relate to public lands and resources. These laws and regulations are often quite unique in that they apply only to federal lands and have no counterparts in state law. BLM Rangers and Agents in Colorado investigate a wide variety of crimes that affect public lands including: illegal guides and outfitters, mineral resource theft, wilderness area violations, hazardous materials dumping, archaeological and paleontological resource theft and vandalism, cultivation, manufacture, smuggling, and use of illegal drugs, timber, forest product, and native plant theft, off-highway vehicle use, alcohol related crimes, and wildland arson. BLM Rangers
BLM Rangers are responsible for conducting high visibility patrols, public contacts, and enforcing federal laws and regulations.
BLM Rangers assist local county and city police departments, other federal and state land management agencies, and BLM Special Agents investigating illegal activity on public lands.
A high priority is providing for the safety of BLM employees and public land users. BLM Rangers within Colorado report to the area Field Office Manager.
BLM Special Agents 
BLM Special Agents conduct criminal and civil investigations into many different types of crimes committed on public lands or involving public resources.
Special Agents actively pursue investigations such as cultivation of marijuana, arson, theft of archaeological and paleontological resources, illegal guides and outfitters, fraud, and assault on BLM employees.
Long-term investigations may require the use of undercover officers, informants, surveillance and travel to various locations throughout the United States. BLM Special Agents conduct search warrants and arrest warrants for individuals or businesses that conduct illegal activity on public lands. BLM Special Agents also provide a working liaison with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, other federal and state law enforcement agencies, and assist BLM Law Enforcement Rangers investigating illegal activity on public lands.
BLM Special Agents within Colorado are supervised by and report to the BLM Office of Law Enforcement Region 4 Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge.
