LANS Board of Governors extends Community Commitment Plan

The Los Alamos National Security, LLC Board of Governors recently voted to extend its Community Commitment Plan for one year. The plan invests $3 million of the company’s management fee each year in regional education, economic development and community giving programs. It is managed by LANL’s Community Programs Office and was launched in 2006 when LANS won the prime contract to manage the Lab for DOE/NNSA.

“LANL is a vital member of the Northern New Mexico community,” said Director Charlie McMillan, who made the request to the LANS Board of Governors. “We and our neighbors are in this together and the LANS Community Commitment Plan has given us an unprecedented opportunity to partner with them on programs that are mutually beneficial and sustainable.”

At a Board of Governors meeting Sept. 6 in Santa Fe, Community Programs Office Director Kurt Steinhaus described to the Board of Governors how the plan has helped raise student science achievement scores, funded scholarships, provided assistance to businesses that helped create and retain jobs and increased Lab employee giving contributions by 270 percent since 2006.

“We were pleased and thankful that the Board of Governors decided to sustain the commitment,” Steinhaus said. “LANS’ generous financial investments are important to the Lab and our Northern New Mexico neighbors and have helped take our employee donations and volunteer work far beyond anything we were able to accomplish in the past.”

The LANS Board of Governors will continue to annually review the Community Commitment Plan and its investments.
