Recruits

New Enlisted

Those interested in joining the Air Guard who have never served before must meet the following requirements.

New Officer

Officers are often selected from enlisted members within the unit, but there are plenty of opportunities available for incoming Air Guard members as well.

Prior Service

The Air National Guard is a great place to continue your military career. You can keep the military benefits you’ve come to rely on – including your retirement plan and health insurance

Age

If you're new to the military, you must be U.S. citizens between 17 and 39, have a diploma or GED, and pass the ASVAB test, a medical exam, and a background check.

If you're currently in the Air Force, there are programs that can help you transfer seamlessly to the Air Guard. It's easy to come back to the military in the Air Guard.

Written Examination

As a new recruit, you'll take the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test, which will help determine what Air Guard jobs you are eligible for.

New officers are required to pass a written examination called the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT).

As a prior service recruit, you should have already taken the ASVAB test and are exempt from the written examination.

Strong Moral
Character

Air Guard recruits must pass a rigorous background check before they can be accepted into the Air Guard.

Tattoos

All members of the Air Guard must meet body art standards, meaning that any tattoos must be able to be covered by the standard military uniform.

The Air Guard is a great place to start or continue a rewarding career in the military. You can serve close to where you live, part-time, in a way that fits your life.

Air Guard Commitment

The commitment for a person that has never served in the military is 6 years. During this commitment you will attend Basic Training and Technical Training full time and the remaining time working part time one weekend a month and a few weeks a year at a minimum.

Where Will I Work?

You'll work close to home at an Air Guard unit near you serving your community. With over 140 units in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands, you can serve near where you live.

Will I Be Deployed?

The Air Guard tries to fill all deployment packages with volunteers. If they can't, and you are tasked, you will deploy.
