(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) announced that Bowman Field and Louisville International Airport will receive a combined $6.9 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation for upgrades.

“Our airports, with partners like UPS, employ more people than anywhere else in Louisville,” Congressman Yarmuth said.  “Particularly now, as we work for the recovery of our struggling economy, we must ensure that Bowman Field and Louisville International Airport have the federal support necessary to continue thriving.”

“We certainly appreciate the support for these two FAA grants, as they will fund several safety-and airfield-improvement initiatives—including the ongoing project to replace incandescent taxiway edge-lights with LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights at Louisville International Airport (SDF).  At Bowman Field (LOU), the funds will be used to install new airfield signage,” said J.D. Nichols, Chairman of the Board for the Louisville Regional Airport Authority.

Louisville International Airport will receive $6.83 million to acquire equipment construct a new taxiway, and rehabilitate apron.  The airport is the home of more than 40,000 Louisville jobs and generates $246 million in local and state tax revenue annually.

Bowman Field, the nation’s oldest continually operating airport, will receive $68,000 to construct the southern portion of a new taxiway.  The new taxiway will reduce congestion, as well as airfield taxiway times.
