The Inspection Division's mission is to ensure compliance and facilitate the improvement of performance by providing independent, evaluative oversight of all FBI investigative and administrative operations.

Types of Work Performed

The Special Agents and Professional Staff employees who work in the Inspection Division are responsible for a wide variety of functions, including:

  • Developing management plans, procedures, and methodologies
  • Performing Field Office and Headquarters Program Evaluations
  • Performing Field Office and Headquarters Financial Management Audits
  • Performing Field Office and Headquarters Automated Data Processing Audits
  • Liaising with External Auditing entities
  • Conducting research, collecting information, and sharing information
  • Conducting Investigations of employee misconduct
  • Completing clerical and administrative functions
  • Performing budgetary assignments (distribution of funds, travel vouchers, etc.)
  • Conducting inventory and maintenance of computer/property/equipment, etc.
  • Delivering presentations and briefings
  • Producing logical and concise written products
  • Applying strong interpersonal skills

Critical Skills/Desirable Backgrounds

The critical skills of interest to the Inspection Division include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Extensive knowledge of FBI Investigative and Administrative operations
  • Knowledge of the management of FBI Investigative Programs
  • Computer skills; including the ability to utilize word processing software, database software (e.g., Access), electronic mail, and query ability for Internet/open source database skills
  • Knowledge of personnel matters
  • Knowledge of property and space management
  • Knowledge of budget matters
  • Knowledge of accounting/auditing principles
  • Strong analytical skills

Career Advancement Opportunities

The Inspection Division offers Professional Staff positions that start from GS-5 and advance to the GS-15 and Senior Executive Service level. Each position within the Division has its own career path. Promotions are merit based and require the demonstrated ability to perform higher-level duties.

Training Requirements and Opportunities

The Inspection Division has a continuing education requirement of 15 hours annually. The Division encourages employees to avail themselves of training opportunities applicable to their positions. Training is offered through the FBI, government, and private vendors on a variety of topics.

Travel Requirements

There are professional positions within the Inspection Division that offer travel opportunities. Usually, travel is domestic to support field office inspection investigations, or to attend conferences, symposiums, and training hosted by the FBI or other U.S. Intelligence Community agencies. International travel is also possible, but limited.
