Providing Energy While Protecting the Environment
Supplying the essential energy services to support human needs while understanding and addressing the environmental consequences associated with energy use is perhaps the greatest challenge ever faced by humankind. The energy systems developed in the last century that provide carbon-based electricity, natural gas, and petroleum have, without a doubt, advanced our standard of living. However, these systems release environmental contaminants into the atmosphere, soil, oceans and water supplies. New energy systems that effectively reduce or completely eliminate emissions are needed to make clean and sustainable power available for the benefit of our lives, our nation's security and economy, and our environment.
The goal of energy research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is to advance security in the U.S. through the discovery, development, production and deployment of cost-effective and sustainable energy systems—while protecting the environment.
