KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- The Wolf Pack took a day to observe the common bonds of friendship between U.S. and the Republic of Korea by hosting a Sports Day here Oct. 19.

"We welcome the valuable contributions our Korean friends have made and continue to make in support of the 8th Fighter Wing," said Col. John Dolan, 8th FW commander. "In gathering here today in the spirit of friendly competition, we affirm our dedication to the principles of freedom and democracy as the basis of our continued strength and friendship."

The 8th Mission Support Group coordinated the event and welcomed more than 250 participants that included Wolf Pack members, Airmen from the 38th Fighter Group, Republic of Korea Air Force, and Korean Employee Union members.

A 5K run kicked off the event, and was followed by 14 other activities that included golf, soccer, basketball, a fire truck pull, tug-of-war, ping-pong, darts, volleyball and more.

"The day was full of fun activities," said Lt. Kim Jong-Hwan, 38th FG ROKAF Public Affairs. "I enjoyed working with our counterparts towards a common goal -- winning a game of tug of war."

Even though the lieutenant's team did not win, he said he still enjoyed the opportunity to participate.

After a full day of activity, Wolf Pack members and their guests piled into the Loring Club to enjoy a barbecue dinner that included roasted pigs and sides. The free meal was provided by the Korean American Gunsan City Association, and was another extension of friendship between the base and the community.

Points were tallied between the different units, and in the end, the 8th Security Forces Squadron defended their name by winning the first-place trophy.

Benny Miguel, 8th Force Support Squadron fitness center director, was happy about the turnout and camaraderie.

"Sports Day wasn't about who won or lost," he said. "It was about coming together and having fun."
